Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Monte Palace Tropical garden is situated at Quinta Monte Palace, which was donated in 1987 by José Berardo Foundation, a private charity. Plants from all over the world enrich this collection of 100,000 species including azaleas, heathers, cycads, and all sorts of trees, as well as a great variety of ferns.

The garden’s founder, José Berardo, brought a collection of cycads (encephalartos) from South Africa. These plants are considered to be living fossils and the garden contains some 60 of the 72 known species of cycads.

These gardens feature the flora from Madeira Island including most varieties from Laurissilva Forest, the ancient laurel forest unique to the Macaronesia region. Other species close to extinction include the Pittosporum Coriaceum, commonly known as “Mocano”.

Open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on 25th December.
